Experience

A Foundation Scholar of Trinity College, Dublin from where he graduated with an LLB (1st class) and later an M.A., Alva is a King’s Counsel with a practice that includes clinical negligence, commercial, construction, professional negligence, inheritance, company, partnership and insurance disputes.

Alva is acknowledged as a leading mediator with an established reputation for integrity, impartiality and tenacity. He was one of the first Irish lawyers to be accredited through assessment as a mediator by CEDR, the Centre for Dispute Resolution and The Academy of Experts, London and he has helped establish Northern Ireland’s preeminent commercial mediation training course at The Queen’s University, Belfast.

Since 2000, Alva has completed 73 appointments as Mediator as well as appearing as a party advocate in many more cases. His style in Mediation is described as ‘robust facilitative’. He also accepts appointment as an adjudicating Arbitrator and provides Early Neutral Evaluation services.

Personal

Married with three adult children, Alva enjoys skiing, sailing, rowing and social golf. He is a former international umpire with The World Rowing Association.
